Applications of SPH to turbulence

Many of the applications of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) have been to flows that are initially laminar
 then become turbulent. Rarely is the resolution adequate to resolve down to the Reynolds length with the result that the simulationsbecome inaccurate.  In this talk I will describe a turbulence model for SPH that is based on the Lagrangian averagedNavier Stokes equations used by Holm and his collaborators with finite difference schemes. The SPH algorithm has been appliedto two dimensional confined flows and found to be in good agreement with  high accuracy spectral methods. Other applications to rotating flows, and to flows driven by cylindrical stirrers will be described.
